What is HL Live?

HL Live is the free app for iPhone and Android from Hargreaves Lansdown. It allows you to deal funds and shares live, with free access to prices, indices, news and research on your mobile.

What are the benefits of HL Live?

HL live is designed to provide you with the tools and investment research you need to make informed investment decisions whenever and wherever you wish, including:

How much does the app cost?

HL Live is completely free and is available to download from the App Store onto your Apple iOS device or from Google Play onto your Android device.

Which mobile devices will the app work on?

Apple iOS devices
The app is designed for any device running Apple's iOS operating system, version 4.3 or above. These include:

  • iPhone 4 or later
  • iPod touch 3rd generation or later

Android devices
The app is designed for most Android devices running the Android operating system version 1.6 or above**. There are numerous devices available, but common ones currently include:

  • HTC Desire S
  • Samsung Galaxy SIII
  • Google Nexus 4

**HL Live is not compatible with Android devices with lower resolution screens, such as the HTC Wildfire. It is also not available on the Amazon Appstore for Kindle Fire or Kindle Fire HD.

Operating system upgrades

HL Live will continue to be optimised for the latest versions of the operating systems iOS and Android. From time to time Apple or Google will release updated versions of their operating system as free upgrades. By keeping your device(s) up-to-date you will benefit from the greater functionality and other improvements. HL Live will always be backwards compatible with older devices however, with each upgrade, older devices will occasionally become unsupported by Apple/Google and thus will no longer be compatible with HL Live.

How secure is HL Live?

When accessing your Vantage Accounts all the information sent and received on HL Live is passed securely over 128-bit encryption; the same high level of security used on our website. By logging in to your account via HL Live, you are logging into the My Accounts & Dealing section of the Hargreaves Lansdown website.

Your personal information and login credentials are never stored on your device, even if you choose to save your username and date of birth while logging in. Therefore, should you lose your device, you can rest assured there is no way your login details can be compromised.

Hargreaves Lansdown will never gather or use information from your device, nor pass it to any third parties, without your knowledge and approval.

How do I find out how to use the app?

When you first load HL Live to your device you will be presented with a tutorial screen. Further tutorials will appear the first time you visit key sections and pages within the app.

The tutorials provide you with some helpful hints on how to perform common functions. Once you have read and understood them, they can be closed by:

  • Tapping anywhere on the screen on Android devices.
  • Tapping on the close icon in the top left corner on Apple's iOS devices.

If you wish to see the tutorial screens more than once, they can be re-enabled in the Information screen on the app (this can be accessed by tapping the i button on your Apple iOS device screen or by pressing the menu button on your Android device).

Can I access the app abroad?

Yes, if you already have HL Live on your device, you can access and use it anywhere in the world. However, you can only download the app to your device from within the EU.

Please note, data roaming charges can be very high when accessing apps such as HL Live from abroad. We recommend you check the data roaming charges with your network provider beforehand.

I am not a Hargreaves Lansdown client - can I still use the app?

Yes, HL live is designed to provide anyone with the tools and research they need to make informed investment decisions. However, if you wish to deal funds and shares or manage your personal accounts, you must be a client with Hargreaves Lansdown.

Can I open an account on the app?

No, but you can open an account online in minutes on our website.

Investment research and information

What investment research and information does HL Live provide?

HL Live is designed to provide anyone with the tools and research they need to make their own informed investment decisions, including:

How do I find the investment research and information I need?

Within the Funds, Shares and Knowledge sections of the app there are multiple sub-sections which can be accessed by scrolling your finger across the top of the screen. By tapping each of these sub-sections you will find the information and research we provide.

For example:

Within the Shares section there are ten sub-sections: Markets, FTSE reports, In the press, Business news, Research, Tips, Director deals, Small cap, AIM and Diary.

Within the Funds section there are seven sub-sections: Overview, Research, Fund of the week, Videos, Investment ideas, Wealth 150 and Manager views.

Within the Knowledge section there are three sub-sections: Expert comment, Featured articles and Free guides.

How "live" is the investment research and information on the app?

Within the Shares section there is a 15 minute delay on prices, indices and charts for funds, LSE listed shares and ETFs. Whilst data is refreshed as soon as a new page is opened, many pages can also be manually refreshed. This can be achieved in the following ways:

Apple's iOS devices – As with many iPhone apps, drag your finger down the main body of the screen as if you were trying to scroll the page upwards beyond the top of the page. At the top of applicable pages you'll see the text 'Pull down to refresh', which will become 'Release to refresh' as you scroll. Release your finger and the page will refresh.

Android devices – Tap the refresh icon in the top right hand corner of the applicable screens. The refresh function is available on screens such as news, accounts, watchlists and factsheets.

How do I search for shares?

In each of the main sections of the app, there will be a small magnifying glass icon in the top right hand corner of your screen which represents the search button. Please note, Android devices also have a search button on the actual device which can be used in the same way.

There are three ways you can search for shares:

  • Search by EPIC – you can enter a three or four character EPIC.
  • Search by investment name – enter at least three letters within your chosen instrument.
  • Search alphabetically – you can run your finger horizontally along the alphabet on the screen and tap on the first letter of your chosen instrument.
How do I search for funds?

In each of the main sections of the app, there will be a small magnifying glass icon in the top right hand corner of your screen which represents the search button. Please note, Android devices also have a search button on the actual device which can be used in the same way.

There are four ways you can search for funds:

  • Search by company – this will show a list of fund management companies, tapping a company name will load its funds, tapping a fund will load its fund factsheet.
  • Search by sector – this will show a list of sectors, tapping a sector will load its funds, tapping a fund will load its factsheet.
  • Search by investment name – enter at least three letters within your chosen instrument.
  • Search alphabetically – you can run your finger horizontally along the alphabet on the screen and tap on the first letter of your chosen instrument.
If I rotate my device, what will this allow me to do?

Rotating your device performs special functions on several pages of the app. You can use the following functions on the following pages:

  • Rotate your device to view an interactive chart on Markets, fund factsheets and share factsheets.
  • Rotate your device to access additional data on your personal Watchlists, Portfolio overview and Account summary.

Apple's iOS devices: On an iOS device the pages stipulated above are the only pages that will allow landscape orientation when you rotate your device.

Android devices: Android devices automatically rotate information to landscape orientation on every page. However, only the pages stipulated above will allow you to perform the special functionality.

Can I subscribe to any information via the app?

Yes, you can request to receive any of our free guides by post. Just visit the Knowledge section, tap Free guides in the top right hand corner, find the guide you're interested in and fill in your details.

Can I switch between the app and hl.co.uk?

Yes, go to the Information screen on the app (by tapping the i button on your Apple iOS device or the menu button on your Android device) and tap our website address, you'll be taken directly to our website.

My accounts

Do I have to log in to use the app?

No, you can use the app to view and navigate all fund and share research and investment information, and create multiple personalised watchlists without logging in to your Vantage Accounts.

However, if you want to deal funds and shares, or view and manage your Vantage Accounts, you need to log in with your username and date of birth, followed by three characters from your Master Password.

We shall never ask you to disclose your Master Password in full or confirm any additional information when you log in.

Do I need a new Master Password to log in to the app?

No, you can use the same Master Password you would normally use to log in via the My Accounts & Dealing section of our website.

When you log in, as usual, you will be required to enter your username and date of birth, followed by three characters from your Master Password.

We shall never ask you to disclose your Master Password in full or confirm any additional information when you log in.

What does the app allow me to do when I log in?

Logging in to HL Live will give you instant access to the investments within your Vantage Accounts allowing you to:

  • Deal funds, shares and ETFs
  • Check the value of your funds, shares, ISAs, SIPPs and other Vantage Accounts
  • View recent transactions
  • Check pending orders
  • Send, receive and manage secure messages
Can I save my login details and Master Password?

You can save your username and date of birth. However, they will never be stored on your device. When the option to save your details is selected, Hargreaves Lansdown will create a key that represents those saved details. This is then encrypted and stored on your device.

The unique cypher to decrypt that key is securely stored by Hargreaves Lansdown, and not on your device, so the next time you log in, Hargreaves Lansdown can verify the key and approve your username and password automatically. This ensures that if you ever lose your phone, there is no way your login details can be compromised.

You cannot save your Master Password.

Is my login data stored by Apple or Android?

No, when the option to save your login details is selected, Hargreaves Lansdown will create a key that represents those saved login details. This is then encrypted and stored on your device.

The unique cypher to decrypt that key is securely stored by Hargreaves Lansdown, and not on your device, so the next time you login Hargreaves Lansdown can verify the key and approve your username and password automatically. This ensures there is no way a third party can access your login details.

How do I place a deal?

Step one: Search

All deals begin with the factsheet of the stock you wish to trade in. There are several ways to find a factsheet:

  1. Navigate to the Shares or Funds section and search using the magnifying glass icon.
  2. From a Watchlist, tap on a virtual holding to go to that stock’s factsheet.
  3. From an account, tap on an existing holding to go to that stock’s factsheet.
  4. Within the My accounts section, tap on the sub-section 'Deal'. You’ll be presented with the option to search for shares & ETFs or funds. Selecting either of these will then take you to the relevant search page. Searching on your chosen stock will take you to its factsheet.

Remember, our service is designed to help you make your own investment decisions. No information on HL Live, or indeed our website, should be construed as advice. It is your responsibility to understand the risks and decide what is suitable for you. If you have any doubts you should seek advice from us.

Step two: Place a deal

Once you're on a factsheet, tap the green 'Place a deal' button, ensuring you've read the key features and terms and conditions. If you haven't yet logged in, you'll be asked to do so before you can proceed.

Once logged in, if you're trading an existing holding, the app will assume you're trading in the same account (e.g. your ISA), however, if you've navigated directly to a factsheet outside an account, you'll be presented with a list of your existing accounts with the amount available to invest in each. Select one to continue.

Step three: Trade details

On this screen you'll be given the opportunity to specify the following details about your trade:

Equities

  • Buy or sell instruction
  • Quantity
  • Whether that quantity is a number of units or a sterling value and, if the latter, whether that value includes dealing charges

Finally you will be required to enter your trading password in full before being able to proceed with the 'Place deal' button.

Funds

  • Investment amount

Finally tap 'Place Deal' to view a summary before you confirm the trade.

Step four: Review and confirm

Shares and ETFs: A confirmation screen will now be displayed with a live market price for the stock you've selected which remains valid for 15 seconds. During this time you can either accept the trade shown or cancel. If the 15 seconds expires you must request a re-quote for a new live price and a further 15 seconds, amend your instruction or cancel.

Funds: After tapping ‘Place deal’ you'll be given a summary of the deal you're placing. At the bottom of the page you must enter your trading password in full and tap ‘Place Deal’ again. Alternatively, you can tap ‘Amend instruction’.

Step five: Deal placed

The deal has been placed! The guidelines outlining the time it will take for the stock to appear on your Vantage Account on our website also apply on the app.

Can I deal in overseas stocks?

No, whilst it is possible to search for overseas stocks on the app and view the factsheet and delayed price, charts and dealing are not currently available on the app.

How can I download the app?
