Jupiter Strategic Bond – new addition to Wealth 150

By Richard Troue | Fri 26 February 2010

The Jupiter Strategic Bond Fund has been added to the Wealth 150 list of our favourite funds in each sector. Ariel Bezalel has managed the fund since launch in June 2008 and he has an outstanding track record going back eight years.  He is rapidly proving himself as a high quality bond manager.

The fund has a flexible approach with the ability to invest across the fixed income spectrum ranging from gilts, the high quality investment grade bonds and the riskier high yield bonds. He also has the flexibility to look for opportunities outside the UK.

Ariel Bezalel has found good opportunities in high yield bonds and currently has around 37% of the portfolio in these. Many are considered special situations with attractive yields and good prospects for capital growth. His focus is on companies with robust business models and strong management; however, they are higher risk. The remainder of the portfolio is mainly invested in the higher quality bonds.

Around 40% of the fund is currently invested in the UK with the remainder in the US and Europe. The fund has also recently bought some Canadian Government bonds as Ariel Bezalel believes Canada is in great financial shape.

Many corporate bonds still offer yields in excess of 5% and although the exceptional returns of the past year are unlikely to be repeated, we believe there are still plenty of opportunities to be found. This fund currently has a yield of 6.4% (variable & not guaranteed) and importantly we believe the fund presents a compelling long-term investment opportunity with Ariel Bezalel at the helm. We are therefore pleased to welcome it to the Wealth 150.
