Sunday tips round-up: Travis Perkins, Avon Rubber, AgBank

Builders' merchant Travis Perkins, owner of Wickes, gave some much-needed cheer to the stock market on Friday when it said it had performed ahead of expectations in the first half, with like-for-like sales up 3.4pc.

However, the Telegraph's Questor does have concerns about general trade demand for Travis Perkins, with around 8pc of the division likely to come under pressure from public spending cuts. Also, as Geoff Cooper, chief executive, said, there are likely to be "false starts" in the recovery and some bumping along the bottom that could affect private sector customers. Questor does not feel confident with this lack of visibility, so, despite the dividend resumption, recommends investors avoid the shares.

Avon Rubber shares are 1011/2p but they should show considerable improvement over the next few years. Chief executive Peter Slabbert and finance director Andrew Lewis have worked hard to create an efficient and attractive business. The firm makes top-notch products for individuals and organisations that really need them and it is continually looking for ways to expand and improve its range. Buy, says the Daily Mail.

Chinese bank flotations aren't just big, they're record-breakingly big. Agricultural Bank of China's (AgBank) listing is set to raise £15.3bn. While it might be tempting to buy into the China growth story at the moment, the risks associated with the country's banking system are such that it would be unwise to buy in now, says the Telegraph's Questor.
