Company overview

Established in 1992 and headquartered in London, Ashmore Group PLC is a leading investment manager dedicated to emerging markets. The group focuses on a number of investment themes including external debt, local currency, special situations (incorporating distressed debt and private equity) corporate debt, real estate and equity. Today it manages US$58.9 billion (October 2011) in pooled funds, segregated accounts and structured products. The company joined the FTSE 100 in September 2011.

HL Comment (13 October 2011)

Emerging market focussed investment house Ashmore Group said this morning, (13 Oct) that assets under management decreased 10.5% in the September quarter end. Ashmore, which has the bulk of its assets in debt products, said assets dropped to $58.9 billion in its first quarter, driven by $7.1 billion of negative performance in its range of funds, with the largest falls coming in local currency, multi-strategy and equity products. This weak performance was partially offset by $200 million of net inflows, principally into multi-strategy themes, during the quarter. The group said that while market conditions remained challenging, recent global economic events reinforced the fundamental attractiveness of the emerging markets asset classes.

Negative Points:

  • Market volatility resulting from the challenging and uncertain macroeconomic backdrop, particularly in the United States and Europe, resulted in the group suffering from adverse investment performance.
  • A sharp price correction in emerging market debt markets could lead to poor performance of investment portfolios, poorer fund flows and lower performance fee earnings.
  • The group remains susceptible to short-term volatility due to global macroeconomic weakness.

Positive Points:

  • The present market volatility and challenging market conditions could be considered an attractive investment opportunity in emerging market asset classes, added Ashmore.
  • The company recently (11 Oct) announced the launch of its Ashmore Emerging Markets Small Cap Equity Fund which will invest in smaller companies in Emerging Market countries globally.
  • Group focus remains on long-term growth, in line with the company’s strategy.

On balance, market consensus indicates a buy.
