A Kraft executive said today he was 'truly' sorry for the 'uncertainty' it created by closing Cadbury's Somerdale factory despite the company's promise to keep it open.
Marc Firestone, the executive vice-president of corporate and legal affairs of the US food giant, spoke as he and other executives appeared before the Commons Business Select Committee.
Firestone also promised that Kraft would not shut any more UK factories for the next two years but stopped short of any specific long-term commitments.
When asked how many years Kraft planned to maintain production at Cadbury's Birmingham base, Firestone said: "Bournville remains at the heart of the Cadbury business and we intend to maintain it, we intend to invest in it, we intend to ensure that it remains competitive."
"I can commit that for at least the next two years, there will be no further closures of manufacturing facilities in the UK," he added.
