Our view on the sector

The emerging markets are a diverse range of economies stretching from Asia and Eastern Europe to South Africa and Latin America. Some are rich in commodities and natural resources, some rely on exporting goods to Western economies, and others have a vibrant consumer-driven society. They're all at different stages of economic development and while we think they've got great long-term growth prospects, they're more volatile and higher-risk than more developed ones. We think a broad global emerging markets fund could be a good starting point, then there are others that focus on a specific country or region.

Fund Management Group Comment

The company was formed in the 18th century, with the name AXA introduced in 1985. AXA bought the specialist investment manager Framlington in 2005. AXA´s fund management arm offers specialist investment expertise across a broad range of asset classes. Each team works closely with their own analysts, and the objective is to achieve high performance.

Ian joined AXA Investment Managers in February 2012 as financials sector analyst for the Emerging Markets team. Ian also oversees Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia. Prior to joining AXA, Ian was an Investment Analyst with Matrix Group covering the financial sector within Asia. Prior to that Ian worked for Nevsky Capital with responsibility the financial sector within for Latam and Asia. Ian has a BA in Economics and Politics from Durham University and gained ACA qualification in 2003.

Paul Birchenough joined AXA IM in April 2011 as an Investment Analyst on the Global Emerging Markets equity desk. He is responsible for covering the materials, industrials and retail sectors across the global emerging market space, and also oversees the EMEA region Paul joined AXA IM from Nevsky Capital where he worked as an Investment Analyst specialising in the Latin America region and across a range of market sectors. Prior to joining Nevsky Capital in early 2010, he was an Associate within the Corporate Finance department at KPMG, advising on the European TMT sector. Paul's earlier career at KPMG included positions in Transaction Services and the Audit department, once again specialising in the TMT sector Paul has a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics from Nottingham University and is an Associate Chartered Accountant
