Our view on this Fund

This fund does not feature on our Wealth 50 list of what we believe are the best funds in each sector. If a fund is not within our Wealth 50 this is not necessarily a recommendation to sell. However, if you are thinking of adding to your investments we believe Wealth 50 funds are superior alternatives. View funds on the Wealth 50 »

Douglas Brodie is a bold investor, investing in companies from around the world he thinks have future growth potential. He's shown he's a skilled stock-picker who isn't afraid to invest in places other managers might view as too risky. We think he's a talented manager but this is a fund for adventurous long-term investors given how volatile the fund can be. Brodie doesn't want lots of new investment in the fund as he thinks it could affect performance, so we won't be considering it for the Wealth 50 list.

Our view on the sector

It's natural for UK investors to focus on funds investing in their home market. But as the world has become more connected, so has the investment landscape. There are lots of funds investing across the globe, and these can be a great way to diversify an investment portfolio. Funds in the global sector can invest anywhere in the world. But they go about this in different ways. They vary in how much they can invest in certain types of companies, sectors, countries, or regions. Some focus on developed markets or large multinational corporations, while others invest more in higher-risk emerging markets or smaller companies. Some target companies with higher-growth expectations and others search for unloved companies with the potential to recover.

Performance Analysis

The fund's performance has been excellent since Brodie launched it in March 2011. It's done better than the broader global stock market, which our analysis puts down to Brodie's strong stock-picking skills . As he invests in many higher-risk smaller companies though, the performance has been volatile at times. When the stock market has dipped, the fund has normally fallen further.

Investment Philosophy

Brodie believes small companies solving global problems could deliver big gains. He thinks what a company could become in the future is more important than how it's doing now. He also champions staying invested for the long-term, as he prefers to 'run his winners' if he thinks they'll keep growing.

Process and Portfolio Construction

Brodie and his team start their search by exploring areas that interest them, such as biotechnology and disruptive software . They then try to uncover what they believe are the companies with the biggest potential. As a global fund they can invest in companies from anywhere in the world, including higher-risk emerging markets. They've found the most opportunities in developed countries, especially the US . Because of the relatively high-risk nature of many of his investments, Brodie keeps the funds highly diversified with over 100 companies.
