Our view on this Fund

This fund is on the Wealth Shortlist of funds our analysts believe have the potential to outperform their peers over the long term. However, this is not a recommendation to buy.

Leon Eidelman and Austin Forey manage this fund. They focus on quality companies they think can grow their earnings sustainably. They've got years of experience investing in emerging markets, and also have the support of a wide team of analysts. This is invaluable given the vast range of countries and companies they need to look at.

This is one of few funds in the Emerging Markets sector we think could perform better than the broader market over the long term. We view it as a great choice for adventurous investors looking for broad exposure to the emerging markets.

Our view on the sector

The emerging markets are a diverse range of economies stretching from Asia and Eastern Europe to South Africa and Latin America. Some are rich in commodities and natural resources, some rely on exporting goods to Western economies, and others have a vibrant consumer-driven society. They're all at different stages of economic development and while we think they've got great long-term growth prospects, they're more volatile and higher-risk than more developed ones. We think a broad global emerging markets fund could be a good starting point, then there are others that focus on a specific country or region.

Performance Analysis

The fund has performed better than the average fund in the IA Global Emerging Markets sector since launch. Emerging markets can be volatile, though patient investors have been rewarded over the long term. The managers are focused on companies they think can grow their earnings year after year, which could support their share prices over the long run.

Investment Philosophy

The managers take into account what's going on in the wider economy, but they spend most of their time analysing the prospects of individual companies. They think this is the best way to drive long-term performance. They look for those with healthy finances and good levels of corporate governance.

Process and Portfolio Construction

Leon Eidelman and Austin Forey decide what companies make it in and out of the fund. But they also have a wider team of analysts to help them come up with ideas. They travel across the region to visit companies and gain greater insight into what's happening in different economies.

The team look for quality companies by trying to work out how much a company will grow its earnings over the coming years. They also take other things into account, like dividends and how changes in a country's currency might impact a business. They mainly invest in large, established firms, but also invest in some medium-sized companies with greater growth prospects.
