Our view on this Fund

This fund does not feature on the Wealth Shortlist of funds our analysts believe have the potential to outperform their peers over the long term. This is not a recommendation to sell; however, if you are thinking of adding to your investments, we believe the Wealth Shortlist is a good place to start. View funds on the Wealth Shortlist »

Stewart Investors is home to one of the most experienced and longest-standing Asian and emerging markets equities teams. We like their prudent investment approach of seeking high-quality companies with strong balance sheets and robust cash flows, run by trustworthy management teams. They only invest when they feel share prices are lower than a company's true worth and with the intention of becoming long-term shareholders.

The group have sought to restrict inflows into this fund in order to keep it a manageable size. As such it does not currently feature on the Wealth 150 list of our favourite funds across the major sectors. That said, we hold the team in high regard and would expect them to deliver long-term value for investors, although there are no guarantees.

Performance Analysis

The team typically seek quality companies with more defensive characteristics, which they believe will prove resilient throughout a variety of market conditions. This means we would expect the fund to hold up better during times of market weakness, although performance may look pedestrian when markets rise rapidly.

The chart initially shows Tom Prew's record co-managing the Stewart Investors Emerging Markets Fund. It subsequently shows performance of the Stewart Investors Emerging Markets Leaders Fund under the stewardship of Tom Prew and Ashish Swarup. The managers run the fund using the same investment philosophy and process that has been employed since its launch in 2003.

Investment Philosophy

The team adopt a conservative, long-term investment philosophy with a focus on well-managed, high-quality businesses that could offer some protection in tough market conditions. They focus on companies that are positioned to benefit from, and contribute to, the sustainable development of the countries in which they operate, with a focus on environmental, social and corporate governance matters.

Process and Portfolio Construction

The fund has the support of a well-resourced team at Stewart Investors. They seek companies with the highest level of management integrity, low debt, and strong, sustainable cash flows. Valuation is also an important consideration for the team.

The fund is concentrated at 40-60 investments and is invested almost entirely in larger companies. At present the fund is heavily biased towards more defensive areas of the market and domestically-focused stocks to take advantage of the rising wealth and prominence of the domestic consumer. Exposure to highly economically-sensitive areas such as commodities and energy has tended to be limited.
