(Sharecast News) - Ford Motor said on Friday that it would extend the halt on activity at its European factories until at least 4 May.

The halt, which was ordered as the Covid-19 pandemic hit Europe, was set to last for a "number of weeks" according to the carmaker.

"Ford's production restart plans depend heavily on the pandemic situation in the weeks ahead, national restrictions in operation at the time, supplier constraints and the ability of our dealer network to operate," the company said in a statement.

The automaker on Thursday posted a 12.5% fall in US auto sales for the first quarter.

The company's US sales chief also urged the government to support car buyers after the crisis eases as there could be an unprecedented decline in sales and rising claims for unemployment benefits.
