(Sharecast News) - Industrial engineering and aerospace sectors were among the winners on Monday, while utilities all lost out.

The FTSE 100 ended the day just above flat as investors mulled what little progress Theresa May had made with Brexit, mixed Chinese data earlier in the day and mixed reports from US-China trade talks, with US markets closed for Martin Luther King day holidays, reducing trading volumes.

Heavyweight sectors like miners and banks were mostly in the red, with China in particular hitting the former, but others like oil mixed and tobacco and aerospace were generally in positive territory.

In the aerospace sector, BAE Systems was trading higher after it sold a 55% stake in its Land UK tank and combat vehicle division to Germany's Rheinmetall.

Supermarkets were all in the red, although any snippets of news were mainly related to Sainsbury's. There was, for example, a story in the Sunday Telegraph that the Competition & Markets Authority review of the planned merger with Asda could be blocked by Tesco and Morrisons refusing to buy any of the mooted 100 stores that will have to be sold off by Sainsbury and Asda to smooth the deal.

Utilities were down, with Drax, Centrica, United Utiliies and ContourGlobal were losing the most ground, followed by Severn Trent and National Grid, while Pennon and SSE were little moved.
