Johnathan's story
Johnathan invests to achieve financial freedom. He makes use of HL's insights and tools to help him choose his own investments.
Please note: This case study is not personal advice. If you’re not sure what’s best for your situation, ask for financial advice. Investments fall as well as rise in value, so investors could get back less than they invest. Money in a pension is not usually accessible until age 55 (57 from 2028).

"I'm a Chartered Accountant. I gave up my job in the city two years ago to set up my own accountancy practice. My primary motivation was to have more control of my own destiny, and to spend more time with my young family – I have a wife and two girls.
I started investing as I realised that I needed to make my money work a lot harder if I was going to leave my old job behind. Initially, my main focus was to grow my HL Self-Invested Personal Pension (SIPP). I’m happy with the returns I’ve managed to achieve so far but at 45, I realise there's still plenty of time for further potential growth, before I'll need the funds.
I also invest in the HL Stocks and Shares ISA, which has helped give me financial freedom and independence. My current plan is to sell our property investments and gradually move the proceeds into our family ISAs. Over the long term, I feel the stock market could outperform our property investments, as well as reducing the hassle factor considerably.
A colleague at work recommended Hargreaves Lansdown to me. I use the mobile app regularly – it's easy to log in, manage my account and trade when I need to. I also read HL's weekly emails for new investment ideas, and I find the portfolio analysis tool useful.
I find my HL accounts easy to use. The fees are competitive and alongside the security and investment choice offered, I think the service is good value.
Overall, I'm very happy with my HL accounts. I'm achieving my goal of financial freedom through investing – by making sure my money works hard and by spending the money our family needs in our daily lives wisely."
