Anthropic IPO

Anthropic IPO rumours: what UK investors need to know

  • Anthropic is the artificial intelligence (AI) company behind Claude.

  • The firm have filed the paperwork for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) in the US, which could take place as soon as October 2026.

  • If the IPO goes ahead, investors would be able to buy and sell Anthropic shares on the stock market.

Important information: we do not offer advice on the suitability of IPOs. It’s important you understand the risks of investing and make sure you have the details you need to make an informed decision. If the IPO goes ahead, any decision to invest in Anthropic should be made solely on the basis of the information contained in the prospectus, disclosure summary, and any official supplements to these. Investing for 5+ years increases your chances of positive returns compared to cash savings. But investments rise and fall in value, so you could get back less than you put in. If you’re not sure what’s right for you, ask for advice.

The Anthropic story so far

Anthropic was founded by Dario and Daniela Amodei in San Francisco in 2021.

The company develops the Claude family of large language models (LLMs). Positioning itself as a public benefit corporation – a for-profit venture that aims to make a positive public impact – their core philosophy claims to prioritise safety, honesty, and responsible AI development.

Why is an Anthropic IPO so highly anticipated?

Wall Street and the wider world are watching closely. Here are three reasons why.

1. It could be the biggest AI IPO ever

Anthropic has got the ball rolling on a potential IPO by reportedly filing confidential IPO paperwork with the relevant US authorities. It’s widely expected to pursue a valuation approaching $1 trillion, which would make it one of the largest technology listings ever.

2. It’s seen as a pure-play AI investment

Investors who want exposure to potential growth from AI may have been watching US tech giants such as Microsoft, Alphabet (Google), Amazon and Meta.

But those companies offer a range of products aside from AI. Anthropic would offer something closer to a direct bet on the future of advanced AI itself, which is currently less common in public markets.

3. It’s already one of the industry's leaders

Anthropic was once viewed as a smaller rival to OpenAI. That perception has changed. Recent funding rounds valued Anthropic at roughly $965 billion, and some reports suggest it has surpassed OpenAI on certain enterprise metrics and revenue growth measures.

Many investors now see the race for advanced AI as a contest between a handful of companies. Anthropic’s models are firmly in the top tier.

Are IPOs right for you?

Investing in individual shares as part of an IPO isn’t right for everyone. Investments rise and fall, so you could get back less than you invest. Before you invest, you should make sure:

  • Any shares you own form part of a diversified portfolio.

  • You're happy to invest for the long term - we suggest at least five years.

  • Any decision to invest is based on the prospectus and disclosure summary. Specific risks will be detailed in the disclosure summary.

  • You understand the nature of an IPO. Companies won’t always have a long track record and can therefore be difficult to value or price.

  • You’re comfortable that you won’t know the purchase price in advance of the IPO.

By covering or mentioning an IPO, we are not endorsing the issue or attempting to generate interest in the listing. This isn’t personal advice. If you’re not sure what’s right for you, ask for advice.
