Our view on the sector

The emerging markets are a diverse range of economies stretching from Asia and Eastern Europe to South Africa and Latin America. Some are rich in commodities and natural resources, some rely on exporting goods to Western economies, and others have a vibrant consumer-driven society. They're all at different stages of economic development and while we think they've got great long-term growth prospects, they're more volatile and higher-risk than more developed ones. We think a broad global emerging markets fund could be a good starting point, then there are others that focus on a specific country or region.

Angel joined Somerset in January 2021 as a Senior Analyst covering Latin America. He has extensive experience investing across Global Emerging Markets, most recently as a Portfolio Manager of the Fidelity International Latin America Fund. He graduated from Universidad Metropolitana, Venezuela, where he read Chemical Engineering. He has a MBA from Kelley School of Business - Indiana University. He became Portfolio Manager of the Somerset EM Discovery Fund on 21st July 2023.

Christopher White is co-manager of the EM Discovery Fund, having worked with Mark Asquith and Henrietta Seligman on the Smaller Companies Strategies since 2018. Christopher joined Somerset as an analyst covering EMEA in 2016, having completed an MBA from Columbia Business School. He previously worked in investment banking for Goldman Sachs. Christopher White graduated from Magdalen College, Oxford, where he read Classics. He is a CFA charterholder.
