Our view on this Fund

This fund is on the Wealth Shortlist of funds our analysts believe have the potential to outperform their peers over the long term. However, this is not a recommendation to buy.

We think this is a great choice for a European tracker fund. It offers a straightforward way to invest in companies from across the continent and we think Legal & General is one of the best tracker fund managers around. It's also one of the lowest-cost ways to invest in Europe.

Our view on the sector

Europe has been blighted by political issues in recent years. And some European economies are struggling with high levels of debt and unemployment. But it's important to disconnect a region's economic prospects from its stock market prospects. Europe is home to lots of successful businesses that make money across the globe - from the US to high-growth areas like Asia and emerging markets. That means their prospects aren't heavily reliant on Europe's economy. Some investors have overlooked the region in recent years. But we think Europe is a great place to invest for the long term and there are plenty of high quality fund managers to choose from.

Performance Analysis

This fund aims to track the performance of the broader European stock market. Since launch it's tracked the index closely. The fund's charges are competitively low, though performance will always be slightly behind the index because of these costs.

Investment Philosophy

Tracker funds are one of the simplest ways to invest. They aim to match the performance of an index, rather than beat it. They usually do this by investing in every company in the index. This means they don't need analysts to research individual companies, which keeps costs to a minimum. If the fund's costs are low it's likely to track the index more closely.

Process and Portfolio Construction

This fund invests in every company in the FTSE World Europe ex UK Index and in the same proportion. This is called full replication and could help the fund track the performance of the index closely. Legal & General is a fairly conservative tracker fund manager and they don't lend investments like some others do. They look for other opportunities to reduce costs though, like when they rebalance the fund to match the index, or by reinvesting dividends.
