Wealth Shortlist Updates

Wealth Shortlist Updates

The Wealth Shortlist isn’t personal advice. A change to the list isn’t a recommendation to buy or sell. You’ll need to consider your own goals, attitude to risk and wider portfolio before making any investment decision. Funds can fall as well as rise in value and you could get back less than you invest

30 June 2020

The Wealth 50 evolves to the Wealth Shortlist

We created our fund lists to help people choose from the wide range of funds available. Our Wealth Shortlist shows the funds which our analysis indicates have the greatest long-term potential to outperform.

Over the years, we’ve refined our process as we adapt to better meet our client needs, industry requirements and market conditions. We moved from the Wealth 150 to the Wealth 50, and now to the Wealth Shortlist.

The Wealth Shortlist is an evolution of this important tool for our clients, with more flexibility to highlight a broader range of what we think are great funds to clients. We’re focusing on performance potential, with key areas of our analysis honing in on managers, their processes and the culture of management companies.

Royal London Sterling Extra Yield Bond

M&G Recovery

This fund was removed from the list following a loss of conviction in the manager's ability to outperform the broader UK stock market over the long term.

Tom Dobell tries to invest in companies that have fallen upon hard times, but where there is scope for a recovery. This 'value' style of investing has largely been out of favour for much of the past decade, so we'd expect some underperformance from his fund.

However, in periods where his investment style has returned to favour, the fund's performance has shown little improvement and we don’t feel we've been rewarded for our patience.

Lindsell Train UK Equity Fund

Lindsell Train Global Equity Fund

We have policies and procedures to help us manage the list. As part of this, we keep under review the proportion of Hargreaves Lansdown plc shares owned by a fund, or multiple funds controlled by a single manager, on the list. We do this to protect the interests of our clients and shareholders, the independence of our investment process, and the service we provide to our clients.

Hargreaves Lansdown plc shares are held in both the Lindsell Train UK Equity and Lindsell Train Global Equity funds. As the funds have grown in size, the investment in Hargreaves Lansdown plc shares has grown too.

We continue to have high conviction in managers Nick Train, Michael Lindsell and James Bullock and their ability to outperform in the future. This is not a decision based on a change in our view of the managers or a reflection of their performance.
