How to add money to a Junior ISA
Adding money to your HL accounts gives you more to invest and is usually quickest online. Here's how to add money to a Junior Investment Account.
Before you start
- Only the parent or guardian associated with the junior account can trade after money has been added.
How to add money on the website
- Log in online to see your accounts
- From the list of actions, select 'Top up' next to your chosen account
- Read the Key Features before going any further
- Enter the amount of money you want to add
- Enter the 16-digit number across the middle of your debit card
- Enter your card's expiry date in the format MM/YY
- Enter the CVC number. This is the last 3 digits on the back of the card
- Select 'Make payment' to confirm
How to add money on the mobile app
- Select 'Accounts' in the bottom left corner
- Log in using the verification method you have set up
- Select the account you want to add money to
- Select 'Action' then select 'Add money'
- Read the important information shown
- Enter the amount you want to add then select 'Continue'
- Enter the details of the debit card you want to use
- Select 'Make payment' to confirm
Adding money if you're not the registered contact for a Junior ISA
Grandparents, friends, and other relatives can add money to a Junior Stocks and Shares ISA, even if they’re not the registered contact on the account. To do this you need the child’s name, date of birth, and the username or client number for their account.
To do this on the website:
- Go to the Junior ISA application page.
- Select ‘Gifting money to a child for their HL Junior ISA’.
- Enter the username or client number for child’s Junior ISA.
- Enter the Child’s name and date of birth.
- Enter your own name, date of birth and address details.
- Enter the amount of money you want to add.
- Enter the 16-digit number across the middle of your debit card.
- Enter your card’s expiry date in the format MM/YY.
- Enter the CVC number. This is the last 3 digits on the back of the card.
- Alternatively you can set up monthly payments by entering the amount, followed by the name on your bank account along with your sort code and account number.
- Click the green button to confirm.
Once you’ve added the money, the registered contact will be able to log in and give any investment instructions.
What happens next
Your 'amount available to invest' will update as soon as the payment is authorised, although the money may not leave your bank account until a few days later.
You will be able to trade as soon as you have added money.
Adding money timings
If you've added money to your account by debit card, you'll want to understand how long it takes before you can invest it. Here's what you need to know.
Money reaches your HL account: Immediately
When you can trade : Immediately
The 'amount available to invest' for your chosen account will update as soon as your debit card payment is authorised.
Then you can trade straightaway. It may take 1-2 working days for the money to leave your bank account.
Your HL account may also show a negative balance if you trade before this happens.
If you see a negative balance after adding money
A negative balance is normal after you've added money. It will update soon as the money arrives in your HL account.
