What is a W-8BEN?
A W-8BEN form allows Hargreaves Lansdown to claim a reduction in the level of US tax on your dividends and interest from US shares. Withholding tax rates can be reduced from 30% to 15%, or to 0% if the holding is held in a SIPP. The form is mandatory before trading US shares. A W-8BEN is valid for three calendar years after the year in which it was signed. A new form must be submitted when the existing one expires, and Hargreaves Lansdown will inform all clients in advance of expiry.
If you are a resident in the UK and the form is for an account held by a UK individual, the easiest way to submit or update a W-8BEN is through your online account:
- Log in to your account
- Select the 'Account settings' tab
- Select 'Share dealing and live prices' and follow the on-screen instructions
Alternatively, you will be taken through the process when you make your first US stock trade online.
If you are not a UK resident and/or the form is for an account that is not held by you individually, or if you would prefer to return the form in the post, please use the link below. Once complete, sign and return your W-8BEN by post for free to Freepost HARGREAVES LANSDOWN. Please note that we need to receive the signed original.
