How to change your name

If you have changed your name, you can update your name either online, by posting a form or by phoning our Helpdesk.

If your name has not changed but we hold the incorrect name for you, please contact us.

Before you start

To change your name, you’ll need to send us a certified or original copy of the document that evidences your new name.

The documents we need will depend on your reason for the name change:

  • Marriage or civil partnership: You will need to provide a marriage certificate, civil partnership certificate or deed poll.
  • Divorce: You will need to provide a decree absolute and either a marriage certificate, birth certificate or deed poll.
  • General name change: You will need to provide a deed poll.

If you’re sending a certified copy, each page must be completed with the words: ‘the copy is a true and complete copy of the original’. Each page must also have an original signature. The front or last page must give full contact details, including the profession, of the person who has certified the copy.

It must be certified by one of the following:

  • Solicitor
  • Bank manager
  • Stockbroker
  • Investment manager
  • Independent financial adviser
  • Accountant
  • Teacher
  • Doctor
  • Minister of religion
  • Justice of the peace

How to change your name online

  1. Prepare the required documents to evidence your name change, for example a marriage certificate.
  2. Prepare one of these additional identity documents, ensuring it is in date and valid:
    - Photo driving license (full or provisional)
    - Passport
    - National identity card (non-UK national) or UK residence permit
    - Identity card issued by the Electoral Office for Northern Ireland
  3. Visit Mitek, our data verification company, to provide proof of your identity. If you are using a laptop or PC, save a scan of your document to your computer. If you are using a mobile device, such as a phone or tablet, you can take a photo of the document for upload. You may need to update your camera settings to allow this.
  4. Enter your first and last name when prompted. These must match the name on your identity document, whether or not this has been updated to your new name.
  5. When prompted to provide a reference, enter your HL Client Number.

How to change your name by phone

For account holders over the age of 18, we may be able to electronically verify your name change. If we are unable to electronically verify your new name, our Helpdesk agents will send a link for you to upload the required documents.

How to change your name by post

  1. Download the change of name form linked below.
  2. Complete section 1 with the details we currently hold for you.
  3. Complete section 2 with your new name.
  4. If there are any additional details you need to change, complete section 3.
  5. Sign and date the form in section 4.
  6. Enclose a certified or original copy of your marriage certificate, deed poll, birth certificate or decree absolute.

What happens next

If you’ve changed your name by post, it typically takes 2 to 3 working days to process the change once we receive your form. We’ll write to you to confirm your details and return your documents once your name has been updated.

If you’ve changed your name online, you’ll receive a confirmation notification from Mitek once you’ve successfully uploaded your documents. We’ll review your request, usually within 3 working days. You’ll receive a confirmation secure message or letter confirming the change.
