Buying a home abroad
Buying a house abroad can be incredibly exciting. But add in a foreign language and purchase process, and things can quickly get complicated. We spoke to one of our clients, Linda Glover from Yorkshire, about her experience of sending money to France to help her daughter buy a house there.
Why were you looking to make an international payment?
"My husband and I have our own flat in Paris which our daughter has been living in. We have made a number of transfers to France in the past, mostly on an ad-hoc basis. Our daughter moved from Paris to Marseilles and this summer she was looking to buy a house, which we wanted to help with.
What problems have you experienced in the past?
"We have previously experienced issues receiving the money in France. Normally the payments are sent okay but we get constant questions from the French side and they have repeatedly bounced the payments back.
"When we first started to make international payments we used our bank but the service stopped without notice. At the time we had accounts with you and we were impressed with the service we had received, so we decided to use your currency service to make our payments to France.
We really appreciate the human touch that you get with the HL Currency Service.
How did our currency service help?
"I was particularly nervous given our experience of bounced payments in the past, especially as we had a deadline to meet for the house purchase. However, your staff were very reassuring and checked that everything had gone in okay. That really took the stress away and gave me the security of knowing everything was in hand.
"We really appreciate the human touch that you get with the HL Currency Service. Your staff are always so courteous and much more empowered to make decisions and sensible arrangements with clients than most other organisations. You cannot underestimate how much people appreciate great service.
"My husband is deaf which can make it difficult when we have to contact banks and utility companies. They can be a nightmare. Sometimes they even ask for him to be put on the phone! However, we don’t get that silliness with you; your process is simple and makes it easy for me to discuss our accounts.
"We also like the ability to move money from our other HL accounts which means we don’t have to keep it in different places.
Buying business materials from Europe
Whether it’s buying and selling goods abroad or paying overseas staff, it is becoming more common for businesses to make international payments.
Changes in the currency markets can have a big effect on the cost of goods which go straight on the bottom line. This is especially true when transactions take place months into the future.
We spoke to one of our clients, Martin Lloyd from Siteright, about how our currency service helps protect his company from exchange rate volatility.
Why does your business make international payments?
"We are a construction supplies company and we purchase a lot of materials from Europe. I’m not sure if it’s because of Brexit but we’ve noticed that some of our suppliers who used to be happy to be paid in sterling are now insisting we pay in euros.
How did you make these payments before?
"We used to use our bank when we first started to make international payments but the rates were not very good. We had business and personal investments with HL at the time so we decided to switch to you.
"When we first moved on from our bank we did compare your quote with another currency specialist but we went with you as we knew the level of service we would get from Hargreaves Lansdown. We get approached by other foreign exchange companies quite regularly but it seemed like they had an overly complicated process to set things up. With you it’s easy.
The HL customer service is excellent throughout the business. Calls are answered immediately by knowledgeable staff who know what they are talking about. It's brilliant...
Which service do you use?
"We normally set up a forward contract which fixes the exchange rate for a set period of time – we usually go for three months. It’s important for us to know how much the materials are going to cost and this gives us peace of mind to know the rate we’re going to get. It’s not a complicated process.
How much did you save?
"It was at least a couple of hundred pounds each time, but it depends on how much we are looking to transfer.
What is the main benefit of using our currency service?
"Service. The HL customer service is excellent throughout the business. Calls are answered immediately by knowledgeable staff who know what they are talking about. It’s brilliant - you don’t get that level of service over the telephone with other companies in the UK. Your staff are always willing to go out of their way to help.
Do you keep up to date with the latest news and research from us?
"Yes we receive your weekly currency reports. Although I can’t do anything about the market they do help me keep on top of developments, such as spikes in the pound. Sometimes I may decide now is a good time or I may decide to wait a couple of weeks.
