Our view on the sector

China has continued to grow its economy strongly but the rate of growth has slowed in recent years. The economy is going through a transition, shifting from a focus on low-value exports, high investment and infrastructure spending, to domestic consumption and services. Companies are also benefiting from looser regulation, anti-corruption policies, rising consumer spending and improved healthcare and technology. China's a higher-risk emerging market though. The transition from an export-driven to consumption-driven economy will not happen overnight. It could take years to come to fruition and there will be setbacks along the way.

David Billaux joined Pictet in 2011. He is an Investment Manager with responsibility for foreign equity indexation in the Quantitative Investment team. Previously he worked for three years at Northern Trust, where he managed global indexed portfolios with a focus on small caps and emerging markets. From 2001 to 2008, he worked at Sinopia (HSBC Group) in various trading and portfolio management activities. David graduated from the Reims Management School with a degree in Market Finance and International Strategy and holds a master degree from the Institut Supérieur de Commerce de Paris in Financial Engineering and International Treasury. He holds the Investment Management Certificate.

Samuel Gorgerat joined Pictet in 1989. He is a Senior Investment Manager in charge of indexed portfolios in the Quantitative Investment team. Before assuming his current position in 2005, he was working in the Performance and Risk Measurement team. Samuel holds the Federal Diploma in Banking Economics and a CFPI diploma.
