Our view on this Fund

This fund is on the Wealth Shortlist of funds our analysts believe have the potential to outperform their peers over the long term. However, this is not a recommendation to buy.

As a 'fund of funds' this is a diversified portfolio in a single, convenient investment offered at a low cost. It invests mainly in other Schroders funds, tapping into the expertise of several experienced managers. Between them they cover a broad range of assets including shares and bonds, and there's lots of diversification on offer.

Managers Johanna Kyrklund and Remi Olu-Pitan choose how much of each fund to invest in, depending on their view of the world. We think they've done a good job investing this way. In our view they're supported by one of the best-resourced teams in the UK.

Please note the fund currently holds shares in Hargreaves Lansdown Plc.

Our view on the sector

The Mixed and Flexible Investment sectors could be the answer for investors who want to leave the asset allocation decisions to an expert. Funds in these sectors invest a certain amount of their portfolio in shares, from 0% to 35% in the case of the Mixed Investment 0-35% Shares Sector, 20% to 60% for the Mixed Investment 20-60% Shares Sector, 40% to 85% for the Mixed Investment 40-85% Shares Sector, and 0% to 100% for the Flexible Investment Sector. Any proportion of the fund not invested in shares can be invested in bonds, cash, currencies, commodities or property. Funds within these sectors can be very different from each other so they'll perform differently too. Each should be looked at on its own merits, taking account of your investment objectives and the amount of risk you want to take.

Performance Analysis

The fund's done a good job of performing better than the sector since it launched in 2007. The manager doesn't want the fund's performance to stray too far either way from the benchmark. It's not always been so steady though. It raced ahead of the benchmark in 2009, and had a tough period in 2015. Since then performance has improved though past performance isn't an indication of future performance.

Investment Philosophy

The fund aims to provide a highly diversified portfolio of shares and bonds. The manager believes this can be achieved by combining economic insights with the expertise of experienced fund managers.

Process and Portfolio Construction

Johanna Kyrklund heads Schroder's highly experienced asset allocation team. They meet regularly to decide on how much to invest in different areas and assets. These decisions are based on their global economic views. Once they've recommended where and how much to invest, Kyrklund and Olu-Pitan then select several different funds that reflect those views.

Most of those funds are run by Schroders, but the managers can also invest in other funds if they feel they're better suited. Collectively those funds invest in hundreds of different companies and bonds. This means the portfolio offers investors a high level of diversification.
