Our view on the sector

Europe has been blighted by political issues in recent years. And some European economies are struggling with high levels of debt and unemployment. But it's important to disconnect a region's economic prospects from its stock market prospects. Europe is home to lots of successful businesses that make money across the globe - from the US to high-growth areas like Asia and emerging markets. That means their prospects aren't heavily reliant on Europe's economy. Some investors have overlooked the region in recent years. But we think Europe is a great place to invest for the long term and there are plenty of high quality fund managers to choose from.

Before joining Baillie Gifford in 2019, Christopher was a researcher for a think tank in Westminster. He studied Classics at Trinity College, Cambridge and was the 2015/16 Choate Fellow at Harvard University.

Joe is head of our European Equities Team and the lead decision maker for the European Growth Trust. He is also a member of the International All Cap Portfolio Construction Group. Joe joined Baillie Gifford in 2002 and has worked across European, International and Emerging Markets equities. He has extensive experience engaging with both company management teams and clients, and an investment philosophy centred on identifying durable growth businesses through thorough fundamental research and careful capital allocation. Joe graduated with an MEng in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cambridge in 2002 and gained an MBA from the University of Edinburgh in 2009. He is a CFA Charterholder.
