(Sharecast News) - Balfour Beatty said on Wednesday that it plans to increase its UK workforce by 2,000 over the next two years as it scales up to meet growing infrastructure demand.
The construction and infrastructure group said its UK headcount would rise from around 14,000 currently to 16,000 by the end of 2027. That would represent growth of more than 30% in four years, with employee numbers having stood at 12,200 at the end of 2023.
Balfour Beatty said the recruitment drive was supported by a strong UK order book, with energy a key area of growth. Revenue from UK Power Transmission increased 24% in the first half of 2026, while its order book in the segment stands at £2.1bn, alongside an identified pipeline of £6bn to £8bn.
Around half of the 2,000 new positions are expected to be filled through early-career routes, including apprenticeships, graduate programmes, internships and trainee roles.
Early-career employees currently account for around 9% of the company's UK workforce, with that proportion projected to rise to roughly 12.7% by the end of 2027.
Chief executive Philip Hoare said: "Expanding our workforce by 2,000 is a clear vote of confidence in the market. It shows the scale of opportunity ahead and our commitment to investing in the people, projects and technical expertise that will power Britain's future."
Balfour Beatty shares were down 0.2% at 933p by 1254 BST.
