(Sharecast News) - ChatGPT maker OpenAI announced on Thursday that it is pausing plans for its Stargate UK data centre project.

The move, which was attributed to high energy costs as well as the regulatory environment, comes just weeks after OpenAI appointed new leaders to oversee the Stargate infrastructure initiative.

It also follows a decision by the company in February to rent more AI servers from other cloud providers as opposed to building its own data centres.

"We see huge potential for the UK's AI future," the company said in an emailed statement seen by Bloomberg.

"AI compute is foundational to that goal - we continue to explore Stargate UK and will move forward when the right conditions such as regulation and the cost of energy enable long-term infrastructure investment."
