(Sharecast News) - Major indices closed lower on Monday following another round of US-Iran military exchanges over the weekend.

At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.59% at 51,839.26, while the S&P 500 shed 0.19% to 7,443.28, and the Nasdaq Composite saw out the session 0.05% softer at 25,508.07.

The Dow closed 307.16 points lower on Monday, extending losses recorded in the previous session.

Investor sentiment was initially positive early on Monday after Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei signalled that diplomatic channels between Washington and Tehran remained open, saying intermediaries were still exchanging messages and that talks could continue "based on national interests".

However, oil prices eventually resumed their upward trajectory on Monday, weighing on markets, after Donald Trump warned in a social media post that Iran would pay for the deaths of three US service members "many times over!", lifting crude benchmarks into positive territory.

West Texas Intermediate futures ended the session 0.67% higher at $83.04 a barrel, while Brent futures were up 0.98% at $88.96 a barrel. US Treasury yields also headed higher, with the benchmark tenyear note rising nearly six basis points to 4.598%.

In the corporate space, Domino's Pizza traded higher after posting a surprise rise in US comparable sales, up 0.1% in Q2 versus expectations for a 0.3% decline.

Elsewhere, AMC Entertainment reported record quarterly revenues and adjusted EBITDA in its secondquarter update, with the cinema chain revealing sales had risen 14.2% yearonyear to $1.597bn, while adjusted underlying earnings surged 69.6% to $321.4m - the highest levels in the company's 106year history.

No major data points were released on Monday.
