(Sharecast News) - Major indices were in the red early on Monday as the lateDecember rally showed signs of losing momentum.

As of 1520 GMT, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.14% at 48,641.24, while the S&P 500 shed 0.26% to 6,912.20, and the Nasdaq Composite came out of the gate 0.48% firmer at 23,480.26.

The Dow opened 69.73 points lower on Monday, extending losses recorded in the previous session as the blue-chip was knocked from its fresh record high.

The broader tone remained calm at the openning bell, as many investors were still away for the holidays. With just a few sessions left in 2025, attention has now started to turn to whether Wall Street will be able to maintain its lateyear footing and extend the positive run that has characterised much of December into 2026.

On the macro front, US pending home sales unexpectedly surged in November, according to the National Association of Realtors, hitting the highest level since February 2023. Based on signed contracts, pending home sales rose 3.3% month-on-month, better than expectations for a softer 1% increase and October's upwardly revised 2.4% gain. On an annualised basis, pending home sales were up 2.6%.

Still to come, the Dallas Federal Reserve's December manufacturing index will be published at 1530 GMT.

No major corporate earnings were slated for release on Monday.
