(Sharecast News) - Major indices were in the green early on Friday as market participants digested August's non-farm payrolls report.

As of 1455 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.12% at 45,674.45, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.31% to 6,522.36 and the Nasdaq Composite came out of the gate 0.61% firmer at 21,841.12.

The Dow opened 53.16 points higher on Friday, extending gains recorded in the previous session after stocks staged a late rally.

Friday's primary focus was news that hiring in the US crept only slightly higher in August, undershooting economists' forecasts in the process. According to the Department of Labor, non-farm payrolls grew by 22,000 in August, while revised data also showed that payrolls had, in fact, contracted in June, with non-farm payrolls falling by 13,000, versus initial estimates that they had grown by 14,000. Today's NFP figures follow weaker-than-expected ADP private payrolls data on Thursday.

The rate of unemployment ticked higher by a tenth of a percentage point to 4.3%, as expected, although the labour force participation rate did improve from 62.2% to 62.3%.

In the corporate space, electric carmaker Tesla proposed a landmark compensation package for chief executive Elon Musk, potentially worth as much as $1trn over the next decade. If approved, the package would cement Musk's status as the highest-paid executive in corporate history, while signalling Tesla's intent to dominate the next phase of autonomous transport.
