(Sharecast News) - Wall Street trading got off to a mixed start on Friday as investors digested some key consumer inflation figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

As of 1450 GMT, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.15% at 49,379.49, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.11% to 6,840.16, and the Nasdaq Composite came out of the gate 0.16% softer at 22,560.28.

The Dow opened 72.49 points lower on Friday, extending heavy losses recorded in the previous session (669.42) amid fears around artificial intelligence disruption.

Friday's primary focus was January's consumer price index, which revealed US consumer prices had undershot forecasts last month, with headline CPI rising 0.2% on the month, while the annual rate eased to 2.4%, down from 2.7% in December. Economists expected to see the inflation gauge show a 2.5% year-on-year advance and a 0.3% month-on-month uptick.

Core CPI, which strips out volatile food and energy costs, increased 0.3% on the month and rose 2.5% year-on-year. Food prices were 2.9% higher versus a year ago, while the energy index slipped 0.1% yearonyear.

Elsewhere, news that the United States and Taiwan had finalised a reciprocal trade agreement also drew an amount of investor attention on Friday, with the deal setting a 15% US tariff on imports from Taiwan while committing Taipei to eliminate or reduce tariffs on nearly all American goods and significantly increase purchases of US products over the next four years.

In the corporate space, semiconductor business Applied Materials was up double digits in early action on the back of strong quarterly earnings and an encouraging outlook, while Airbnb also traded higher on upbeat guidance.

Pinterest, on the other hand, was down more than 20% after its fourth quarter results missed expectations and the group offered up weak guidance.

No major earnings were slated for release on Friday.
