(Sharecast News) - Nissan has started the production of its latest electric car in Sunderland, a crucial step in the UK automotive industry's transition away from petrol and diesel. The Japanese manufacturer will launch the third generation of the Leaf on Tuesday, which was the first mass-market battery electric car to be built in the UK. Nissan has made 282,704 Leaf models at the north-east England plant so far. - Guardian

Ministers are expected to back calls to regulate England's funeral industry for the first time, after a series of scandals over the handling of remains. Bereaved families have called for a new investigatory body and rules governing professional qualifications after an official inquiry declared the sector an "unregulated free for all". - Guardian

Britain's immigration rules make it easier for academics on modest salaries to work in the country than for wealth creators such as founders, scientists and entrepreneurs, a think tank has found. The Centre for British Progress (CBP) warned that growth-starved Britain risks squandering a golden opportunity just as Donald Trump has started turning away highly-skilled and entrepreneurial foreigners. - Telegraph

Morrisons has become the first UK supermarket to delay its net zero targets in a setback for Ed Miliband's clean power ambitions. The Bradford-based grocer said it was now aiming to hit the milestone by 2050, having previously set a deadline of 2035. It said the 15-year delay was necessary because its new green targets include emissions across its entire supply chain - not just from its stores as before. - Telegraph

Ford is to pull back from electric cars in a retrenchment that will deliver a blow of almost $20 billion to the American manufacturer amid hostility to green vehicles from President Trump. The Michigan-based company said on Monday it would embark on a wide-ranging overhaul of its electric vehicle (EV) business that will include scrapping some models. - The Times
