Our view on this Fund

This fund is on the Wealth Shortlist of funds our analysts believe have the potential to outperform their peers over the long term. However, this is not a recommendation to buy.

This fund aims to provide long-term growth by investing in European companies. It tends to have a growth bias, with the managers typically looking for companies they believe can deliver stronger earnings growth than other investors expect, though the approach is more flexible than some other growth funds.

Giles Rothbarth leads the fund. He joined BlackRock's European equities team in 2012, became backup manager in 2015, formal co-manager in 2019 and lead manager in 2021. Alexandra Dangoor became co-manager in 2026. She joined BlackRock in 2016 and we think she provides important support to the fund's management. More broadly, the fund benefits from the support of one of the largest and most experienced European equity teams in the industry.

We think the fund could work well as part of the European portion of a broader investment portfolio, or within a global portfolio focused on long-term growth. Its focus on larger European companies and flexible growth approach means it could sit alongside funds using a more value- or income-focused approach.

Our view on the sector

Europe has been blighted by political issues in recent years. And some European economies are struggling with high levels of debt and unemployment. But it's important to disconnect a region's economic prospects from its stock market prospects. Europe is home to lots of successful businesses that make money across the globe - from the US to high-growth areas like Asia and emerging markets. That means their prospects aren't heavily reliant on Europe's economy. Some investors have overlooked the region in recent years. But we think Europe is a great place to invest for the long term and there are plenty of high quality fund managers to choose from.

Performance Analysis

Rothbarth has built a strong track record since being involved with the fund. The fund has outperformed the FTSE World Europe ex UK Index and the average fund in the IA Europe ex UK sector over this time. As always, past performance is not a guide to future returns.

Stock selection has been a driver of long-term returns. We view this positively because it suggests the team's company research has added value over time, rather than performance being driven only by being in the right sector or investment style at the right moment.

Like all funds, this one will not perform well in every environment. It struggled compared with the broader market in 2022, when rising interest rates and a rotation towards value and economically sensitive companies hurt many growth-focused funds.

Over the longer term, we expect the fund to perform well when the growth style of investing is broadly in favour. It could lag when value investing leads the market sharply. We are positive on the fund's long-term prospects, but as always there are no guarantees.

Investment Philosophy

The managers believe that detailed company research can uncover opportunities where future earnings growth is not fully reflected in share prices. The fund is growth-focused, with a particular emphasis on company earnings and cashflow growth.

Process and Portfolio Construction

The team looks at companies through three broad lenses: wealth, resilience and change. In simple terms, they want to identify businesses they believe can create value for shareholders, understand how resilient those businesses are through different market conditions, and assess whether change within a company or industry could lead to stronger future earnings and cashflows. This means the managers do not only focus on more traditional high-growth areas. They invest where they believe earnings growth and future upgrades are stronger than other investors currently recognise.

Alister Hibbert, Managing Director and portfolio manager, is a member of the European Equity team within the Fundamental Equity division of BlackRock's Portfolio Management Group. He has responsibility for continental European portfolio management, adopting a flexible style. Mr. Hibbert joined BlackRock in 2008 from Scottish Widows Investment Partnership (SWIP), where he was an Investment Director, responsible for managing European portfolios. Prior to joining SWIP in 2005, Mr. Hibbert was with Oeschle International as a European equity portfolio manager. From 1994 to 2004, he was with Invesco Perpetual, initially as an economist before becoming a portfolio manager. Mr. Hibbert began his career as an auditor with Ernst and Young in 1992. Mr. Hibbert earned a BSc degree in economics from Bristol University in 1992.
