Our view on the sector

The UK stock market is home to lots of world-class companies. From international giants to a diverse array of smaller businesses. This provides a rich hunting ground for fund managers in this sector. They all try to grow investors' money over the long term, but each goes about it in a different way. Some focus on larger companies in the FTSE 100 index, others invest in medium-sized or smaller companies, and some have the flexibility to invest in any company, regardless of size. James Thorne joined the company in 2010 as a portfolio manager in the UK equities team. He is lead manager of the Threadneedle UK Smaller Companies Fund, deputy manager of the Threadneedle UK Sustainable Equity Fund and co-manager of the Threadneedle UK Mid 250 Fund as well as for a range of small and mid-cap institutional portfolios. He has previously held responsibility for a range of sectors for the wider team including chemicals and technology. James has extensive experience of the smaller companies sector, having worked at Baring Asset Management, Hill Samuel and Abbey Life as well as private equity company 3i.He has a BSc in Oceanography with Geology from the University of Southampton and an MSc in Instrumentation and Analytical Science from the University of Manchester.

Sonal Sagar is a fund manager on the UK equities team with responsibility for researching UK companies in the leisure, healthcare and life insurance sectors. She is the lead manager of the Threadneedle UK Sustainable Equity Fund as well as deputy portfolio manager on a number of institutional and core mandates, in addition to the Threadneedle UK Institutional Fund. Prior to this, Sonal worked at Jefferies International latterly covering European Aerospace & Defence and before this European Pharmaceuticals. Before Jefferies she was at Nomura International as an analyst in Equity Capital Markets. Sonal holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and a BSc in Economics, Politics and International Studies from the University of Warwick.
