Our view on the sector

The emerging markets are a diverse range of economies stretching from Asia and Eastern Europe to South Africa and Latin America. Some are rich in commodities and natural resources, some rely on exporting goods to Western economies, and others have a vibrant consumer-driven society. They're all at different stages of economic development and while we think they've got great long-term growth prospects, they're more volatile and higher-risk than more developed ones. We think a broad global emerging markets fund could be a good starting point, then there are others that focus on a specific country or region.

Michael Bourke joined M&G in March 2015 as an analyst providing analytical support to the Emerging Markets Equities team. He was appointed fund manager of the M&G Emerging Markets Income Opportunities Fund on its launch in May 2017. Michael has 18 years of investment experience. Prior to joining M&G, he spent 10 years working as an emerging markets equities analyst and portfolio manager for Legg Mason and FPP Asset Management. Before that, he worked at Deutsche Bank in a number of roles; firstly as an equity derivatives trader and latterly as a senior analyst/co-portfolio manager in their equity derivatives proprietary trading department. Michael graduated from the University of Manchester with a BSc in Computer Science and Accounting. He also has an MSc in International Banking and Finance from Heriot-Watt University.

Alice de Charmoy was appointed deputy fund manager of the M&G Asian Fund and the M&G Global Emerging Markets Fund in March 2015, having spent nearly two years as a dedicated analyst for the funds. She joined M&G in June 2013 from Comgest in Hong Kong, where she was an analyst focusing on Asian companies. Prior to that, Alice worked for Amiral Gestion as a global equities analyst. She graduated in 2005 from Université Paris Dauphine with a Masters degree in banking and finance. Alice is also a CFA charterholder.

Alastair Bruce was appointed co-deputy fund manager of the M&G Global Emerging Markets Fund in December 2017. He joined the M&G graduate scheme in 2011 and became an analyst in the Global Leaders team. He became a dedicated analyst in the Emerging Markets Equities team in 2015. Prior to this, as part of his degree programme, he spent 14 months working for UBS Global Asset Management as an analyst in the multi-asset team. He graduated with a BSc in Economics from the University of Bath and is a CFA charterholder.
