Our view on this Fund

This fund is on the Wealth Shortlist of funds our analysts believe have the potential to outperform their peers over the long term. However, this is not a recommendation to buy.

This fund offers a low-cost and simple way to invest in smaller companies across developed markets. Smaller companies are often among the most innovative and offer lots of growth potential, although they are more volatile and higher risk than their larger counterparts.

We view this fund as a useful way to gain passive exposure to smaller companies. It could also provide some diversification to an investment portfolio focused on shares in larger companies.

Our view on the sector

It's natural for UK investors to focus on funds investing in their home market. But as the world has become more connected, so has the investment landscape. There are lots of funds investing across the globe, and these can be a great way to diversify an investment portfolio. Funds in the global sector can invest anywhere in the world. But they go about this in different ways. They vary in how much they can invest in certain types of companies, sectors, countries, or regions. Some focus on developed markets or large multinational corporations, while others invest more in higher-risk emerging markets or smaller companies. Some target companies with higher-growth expectations and others search for unloved companies with the potential to recover.

Performance Analysis

Since launch in 2010, the fund has done a good job of tracking its benchmark . As is typical of tracker funds, it’s fallen behind the benchmark over the long term because of the costs involved in running the fund. However, the tools used by the managers have helped to keep performance tight to the index. Given Vanguard’s size, experience and expertise running index tracker funds, we expect the fund to continue to track the index well in the future, though there are no guarantees.

Investment Philosophy

Tracker funds are one of the simplest ways to invest. The fund aims to match the performance of an index, rather than beat it. Factors like withholding taxes, dealing commissions and spreads, and the cost of running the fund all drag on performance. The team work out the best way to match the performance of the index while keeping costs to a minimum. If the fund's costs are low, it's likely to track the index more closely over time.

Process and Portfolio Construction

This fund tracks the performance of the MSCI World Small Cap Index. It’s made up of around 4,000 companies spread across 23 countries in developed markets. It aims to invest in all the companies in the index and in the same proportion. This is known as full replication and should help the fund track the index closely. Vanguard will lend some of the investments in the fund to other providers in exchange for a fee. This can be used to offset some of the costs of running the fund, but stock lending adds risk.
