(Sharecast News) - Apple announced on Wednesday that it plans to ramp up its spending with semiconductor manufacturer Broadcom to produce "billions more" US-made chips as part of a new multi-year agreement.
The deal, worth in excess of $30bn, includes the design and production of custom silicon components and cutting-edge wireless connectivity technologies for a "wide range of Apple products", the American tech giant said.
Apple said the number of chips would top 15bn, as it continues works to create an end-to-end silicon supply chain in America, with $600bn of investment earmarked over a four-year period.
Broadcom is already a part of Apple's American Manufacturing Program (AMP), which was launched last year to accelerate manufacturing in the US. Wednesday's deal marks Apple's largest AMP commitment to date.
The works will enable Broadcom to expand and upgrade its manufacturing facilities in Fort Collins, Colorado.
"Apple and Broadcom have a long history together, and this new phase of our partnership further accelerates our commitment to American manufacturing and innovation," said Apple boss Tim Cook in a statement.
"The cutting-edge components built in Fort Collins are essential to delivering the incredible performance and connectivity our customers expect, and we're proud to deepen our investments in US-based suppliers that share our commitment to excellence and innovation."
Apple shares were down 0.3% in pre-market trade, while Broadcom futures fell 0.4%.
