(Sharecast News) - Oil and gas giant BP announced on Wednesday that Ian Tyler has been appointed chairman, taking up the role immediately following an extensive search that considered both internal and external candidates.

Tyler joined the board as a nonexecutive director in April 2025 and became interim chair in May 2026.

BP highlighted that Tyler has worked with more than 15 chief executives during a long nonexecutive career across listed and private companies in oil and gas, natural resources and engineering.

He currently chairs Grafton Group and serves as senior independent director at Anglo American, and has previously chaired Cairn Energy and served as a nonexecutive director at BAE Systems.

Senior independent director Amanda Blanc said: "I am delighted that the board has unanimously appointed Ian Tyler as chair of BP. Ian brings significant experience providing challenge and support to executive teams, while maintaining strong governance and oversight on behalf of shareholders.

"These qualities have been evident during his time as interim chair, where he has secured the confidence of the board and executive management through his considered leadership, judgement and integrity."

As of 0830 BST, BP shares were up 0.30% at 542.90p.
