(Sharecast News) - Major indices delivered a mixed performance on Monday as investors turned their attention to a heavy slate of earnings and fresh inflation data in the days ahead.

At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.38% at 51,850.55, while the S&P 500 shed 0.06% to 7,807.24 and the Nasdaq Composite saw out the session 0.44% weaker at 27,245.90.

The Dow closed 195.60 points higher on Monday, extending gains recorded in the previous session after tech stocks rebounded as investors tried to shake off a volatile week marked by rising Treasury yields, firmer oil prices and a pullback in the AI trade.

Geopolitics were in focus on Monday after Donald Trump said over the weekend that he was considering joining Saudi Arabia in strikes against Tehranbacked Houthi forces in Yemen, following another deadly attack on Riyadh's international airport.

Trump also announced what he described as an "energy ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine, though oil prices briefly dipped before reversing higher when Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Moscow had already violated the agreement. West Texas Intermediate was last up 2.06% at $93.74 a barrel, while Brent gained 1.17% to $105.94 a barrel.

Market participants will now look towards thirdquarter earnings season, with results from the major US banks set to dominate the week, as Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley and Wells Fargo were all set to report before the end of the week.

While no major data points were released on Monday, traders were also awaiting September's consumer and producer price indexes, set to be released on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
