(Sharecast News) - Major indices put in a mixed showing on Tuesday, with the techheavy Nasdaq closing at a fresh record, while the Dow slipped and the S&P 500 ended broadly unchanged.

At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.36% at 51,863.69, while the S&P 500 was flat at 7,764.64 and the Nasdaq Composite saw out the session 0.45% firmer at 27,244.28.

The Dow closed 185.14 points lower on Tuesday, taking a bite out of gains recorded in the previous session.

Oil prices were in focus on Tuesday amid reports that Iran has offered to re-open the Strait of Hormuz within a week, though the claims have not been independently verified. Also of note, Saudi Arabia was said to be preparing to restart its EastWest pipeline as early as this week.

Donald Trump also said US officials held a "very good meeting" with Iran's delegation that lasted around three hours. Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, Trump said he faced a "big decision" on whether to pursue a deal with Iran or "annihilate" the country. He added that he expected any agreement to come "right after the election", arguing that Tehran was "waiting to see how I do in the midterm election".

Brent crude closed 1.87% lower at roughly $98.46 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude was down 2% at $90.52 a barrel, marking a fifth straight day of losses for both.

Traders also looked ahead to a highprofile summit in Washington between Donald Trump and China's Xi Jinping later in the week, with discussions expected to cover artificial intelligence, the Iran conflict, tariffs and rare earth metals. Ahead of the meeting, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent held talks with Chinese vicepremier He Lifeng.

On the macro front, Fifth District manufacturing activity softened in September, according to the Richmond Federal Reserve, with the headline composite index slipping back into negative territory. The composite measure fell to 2 from 4 in August, as shipments dropped to 5 from 11 and new orders declined to 6 from 3. The employment index, however, improved to 7 from 2, signalling modest hiring momentum.

No major corporate earnings were released on Tuesday.
