(Sharecast News) - Major indices were mixed early on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones heading south and the S&P 500 hitting a fresh intraday high, with oil prices continuing to ease.

As of 1520 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.36% at 51,863.51, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.08% to 7,770.70 and the Nasdaq Composite came out of the gate 0.50% firmer at 27,256.46.

The Dow opened 185.32 points lower on Tuesday, taking a bite out of gains recorded in the previous session.

Oil prices were in focus early on Tuesday amid reports that Iran has offered to re-open the Strait of Hormuz within a week, though the claims have not been independently verified. Saudi Arabia was also said to be preparing to restart its EastWest pipeline as early as this week. Brent crude was down 1.07% at roughly $99.27 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude traded 1.18% lower at $94.65 a barrel.

Traders were also looking ahead to a highprofile summit in Washington between Donald Trump and China's Xi Jinping later in the week, with discussions expected to cover artificial intelligence, the Iran conflict, tariffs and rare earth metals. Ahead of the meeting, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent held talks with Chinese vicepremier He Lifeng.

On the macro front, Fifth District manufacturing activity softened in September, according to the Richmond Federal Reserve, with the headline composite index slipping back into negative territory. The composite measure fell to 2 from 4 in August, as shipments dropped to 5 from 11 and new orders declined to 6 from 3. The employment index, however, improved to 7 from 2, signalling modest hiring momentum.

No major corporate earnings were slated for release on Tuesday.
