(Sharecast News) - Major indices were in the red early on Friday as market participants reacted to news that Israel launched an airstrike on Iran.

As of 1445 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 1.13% at 42,483.14, while the S&P 500 lost 0.68% to 6,003.96, and the Nasdaq Composite came out of the gate 0.79% weaker at 19,508.04.

The Dow opened 484.48 points lower on Friday, more than reversing gains recorded in the previous session following the publication of last month's producer price index from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Stocks headed south after Israel's defence minister declared a special state of emergency following an Israeli attack on Iran, targeting the country's nuclear facilities and missile factories, to which it retaliated by launching 100 drones.

Overnight, some 200 fighter jets attacked the country's main uranium enrichment facility at Natanz, as well as Iranian commanders and nuclear scientists, according to the Wall Street Journal. Mossad agents were also said to be hunting leadership targets in Tehran. The US Department of State claimed that Washington was not involved in the strike and did not assist with the attack on Iran in any way, with Donald Trump only advised of the attack shortly beforehand.

"There has already been great death and destruction, but there is still time to make this slaughter, with the next already planned attacks being even more brutal, come to an end. Iran must make a deal, before there is nothing left, and save what was once known as the Iranian Empire," Trump said. "No more death, no more destruction, JUST DO IT, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE."

Following the news, Brent crude surged 6.88% to $74.13 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate was 7.10% higher at $72.87 a barrel.

Elsewhere, fears regarding unilateral tariffs resurfaced after Trump said, "we're dealing with Japan, we're dealing with South Korea. We're dealing with a lot of them. So we're going to be sending letters out, in about a week and a half, two weeks, to countries, telling them what the deal is, like I did with EU."

On the macro front, a preliminary reading of the University of Michigan's June consumer expectations report will be published at 1500 BST.
