(Sharecast News) - Major indices were in the green early on Monday after Donald Trump stated trade relations with China "will all be fine".

As of 1500 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.94% at 45,906.61, while the S&P 500 advanced 1.10% to 6,624.54 and the Nasdaq Composite came out of the gate 1.39% firmer at 22,513.31.

The Dow Jones opened 427.01 points higher on Monday, taking a bite out of heavy losses recorded in the previous session after Donald Trump stepped up his protectionist trade measures against China, breaking a tariff truce that had been in place for months.

Wall Street stocks opened higher on Monday after Donald Trump signalled he may not proceed with a "massive increase of tariffs" on China - a threat that had reignited trade war fears and triggered a $2trn market rout last week.

"Don't worry about China, it will all be fine! Highly respected President Xi just had a bad moment. He doesn't want Depression for his country, and neither do I," Trump said. "The USA wants to help China, not hurt it."

Vice president JD Vance echoed the shift in tone, stating that the US was open to talks if Beijing was "willing to be reasonable", though he claimed Washington held "far more cards" if not. The remarks helped steady sentiment after Friday's sharp sell-off.

However, broader concerns lingered as the Federal government shutdown entered a new week, with a key payroll deadline looming on 15 October and many federal workers facing the prospect of missing their next paycheque.

In the corporate space, Broadcom shares traded higher after the chipmaker formalised its partnership with OpenAI, with the two firms set to jointly build and deploy 10 gigawatts of custom AI accelerators, while JPMorgan shares ticked up after unveiling a ten-year strategy to finance and invest in companies considered vital to US national security.

Third-quarter earnings season will kick off tomorrow, with Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Morgan Stanley all due to report their latest set of quarterly results over the next two days.

No major data points were scheduled for release on Monday.
