Our view on this Fund

The stock market is an excellent home for long-term savings, but being at the mercy of unpredictable gyrations can be uncomfortable. The HL Multi-Manager Strategic Assets Fund aims to smooth these gyrations, whilst still offering potential for long-term capital growth.

Our view on the sector

The Mixed and Flexible Investment sectors could be the answer for investors who want to leave the asset allocation decisions to an expert. Funds in these sectors invest a certain amount of their portfolio in shares, from 0% to 35% in the case of the Mixed Investment 0-35% Shares Sector, 20% to 60% for the Mixed Investment 20-60% Shares Sector, 40% to 85% for the Mixed Investment 40-85% Shares Sector, and 0% to 100% for the Flexible Investment Sector. Any proportion of the fund not invested in shares can be invested in bonds, cash, currencies, commodities or property. Funds within these sectors can be very different from each other so they'll perform differently too. Each should be looked at on its own merits, taking account of your investment objectives and the amount of risk you want to take.

Performance Analysis

This fund is a relatively new edition to the HL Multi-Manager fund range. However, we have been analysing and investing in the types of fund it invests in for many years.

By controlling exposure to shares and holding a range of other assets the fund will surrender some upside when stock markets are rising in order to maintain a balanced approach and shelter capital during the inevitable downturns. This does not mean the fund won't fall in value - if financial markets go through a difficult time there will be losses, particularly if share and bond prices fall at the same time so investors could still get back less than they invest. However, the aim is for the capital value to fluctuate less than a fund invested entirely in shares.

Investment Philosophy

Investment markets are inefficient and there exists a select group of managers able to extract value from them over time. These exceptional fund managers can be identified via a combination of detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis. Selective asset allocation can also add value over the long term for patient investors.

Process and Portfolio Construction

Fund managers, David Smith and Roger Clark, will blend complementary funds into a single portfolio. Each is carefully chosen with the whole portfolio in mind and designed to fulfil a particular role and dovetail well with other positions.

The core will be invested with fund managers who have demonstrated a track record of shrewdly combining different assets to grow capital during good times and offer some shelter in tougher conditions. We have been investing in these funds for many years.

Outside the core, David Smith and Roger Clark will aim to enhance returns by investing with other fund managers they rate highly. This could include additional conservatively-managed funds to help shelter capital if stock markets fall; funds investing in undervalued areas where they see long-term growth potential; or managers that simply have outstanding records of adding value for investors.

The HL Multi-Manager Funds are managed by our sister company HL Fund Managers.
