Siemens Energy has begun preparations to separate its Transformation of Industry division into a standalone company as it sharpens its focus on power generation and transmission.
The German energy tech titan announced late on Tuesday that it was starting the legal and operational separation of the business, with the aim of giving it greater entrepreneurial flexibility and more options for growth.
Plans include bringing in external investors or pursuing a potential capital markets transaction, it said.
Siemens Energy intends ultimately to deconsolidate the business while retaining a "meaningful minority stake".
Transformation of Industry employs around 17,000 people and generated 5.7bn of revenue in fiscal 2025, with a profit margin of 11.3%.
The unit, which covers industrial steam turbines, compressors, hydrogen electrolysers, generators, motors and maritime and subsea technologies, "has developed successfully over the past several years and is now a profitable, high-growth business", according to Siemens Energy boss Christian Bruch.
"We see the potential for further profitable growth if we can accelerate the business's continued development."
Siemens Energy said the division serves markets with different customer needs from the rest of the group and would be better placed to respond quickly as an independent business.
The carved-out company is initially expected to operate under Siemens Energy's future Omterra brand.
Siemens Energy shares were down 0.5% at 151.98 by 1346 BST.
