Our view on the sector

UK investors need little introduction to America. It's the world's biggest stock market and is home to world-leading companies in almost every industry there is, from media and film, through to manufacturing and transportation. We think most diversified portfolios should have some exposure to the US market. But it's one of the most heavily researched in the world so share prices of well-known companies can react quickly to new information. We think this can make it more difficult for fund managers to find opportunities missed by others and to consistently perform better than the broader market over the long term. Many funds investing in the US aim to grow the value of your original investment, rather than pay a high level of income. Some focus on the largest companies in the market. Others look for opportunities amongst small and medium-sized companies, which may offer greater growth potential, but are higher risk.

James B. Lovelace is an equity portfolio manager at Capital Group. He has 34 years of investment experience, all with Capital Group. Earlier in his career, as an equity investment analyst at Capital, Jim covered beverages & tobacco, restaurants & lodging, household products and personal care companies. Jim's investment approach embraces growth and income as a core strategy rather than just an investment category. He strives to earn a solid yield as the foundation of his long-term investment results. In order to achieve an above-average portfolio yield, he focuses on those companies with substantial current dividend yields to balance with those of average yield but higher growth of income. Jim describes his buying approach as being ?less worried about buying it ?just right' and more interested in what the dividend will be in three to five years.? His approach leads to a portfolio with less volatility and less turnover than most others. Investments stay in Jim's portfolios for a long time as evidenced by his very low turnover of about 10% in any given year.

Earlier in his career at Capital, as an equity investment analyst, he covered U.S. telecommunication services, autos, and auto parts & equipment companies. Chris is attracted to investments in which there are widely understood and accepted reasons to be pessimistic about a company, but where our work reveals underlying strengths that are not appreciated by the market. ?In many cases these tend to be companies with low valuations and weak current results, but with great potential for improved results in the future,? explains Chris. This contrarian style works best during periods of stress, when investors become excessively pessimistic. He is also willing to invest in more highly valued companies where our analytical work suggests there is a durable long-term competitive advantage that will offer sustainably high returns. Chris tends to hold a portfolio of around 30 stocks, with the top 10 positions typically representing 40-50% of the portfolio.
