Wealth Shortlist Update: Artemis Strategic Bond

Important notes

This article isn’t personal advice. If you’re not sure whether an investment is right for you please seek advice. If you choose to invest the value of your investment will rise and fall, so you could get back less than you put in.

We have taken the decision to remove the Artemis Strategic Bond fund from the Wealth Shortlist.

The fund’s current co-managers James Foster and Alex Ralph are both leaving Artemis. Foster will retire from fund management and as a result of a subsequent restructure of its fixed income teams, Ralph has left the company. We rate the experienced duo highly so are disappointed to see them depart.

The fund was added to Wealth 150, a predecessor of the Wealth Shortlist, when the fund launched in 2005. It's delivered good returns for long-term investors. The fund has returned 125.8%* compared with 100.1% for the IA £ Strategic Bond sector peer group average. Past performance is not a guide to future returns.

Although we’re removing Artemis Strategic Bond from the Wealth Shortlist, this isn’t a recommendation to make any changes to a portfolio. Investors should make sure any investments match their investment goals and attitude to risk. If you're not sure if an investment is suitable for your circumstances, please seek advice.

The fund's new co-managers

The fund will be co-managed by Juan Valenzuela and Rebecca Young. Valenzuela joined Artemis from Kames Capital in 2019 and currently co-manages the Artemis Target Return Bond fund. Young will join from Janus Henderson in November 2021 and until then, newly promoted Head of Fixed Income Stephen Snowden will act as deputy fund manager. We’re pleased Snowdon will have oversight of the fund as Head of Fixed Income as he is a manager we hold in high regard.

While we have no reason to believe they aren’t capable fund managers, Valenzuela and Young are less experienced and we aren’t as familiar with them as investors. As a result we don’t have the required level of conviction to retain the fund on the Wealth Shortlist.

When a fund’s managers change, we expect to see some changes in the fund’s investments given every fund manager will have their own views. However, the fund’s objective to provide a combination of income and capital growth will remain the same.
